Homemade Crafts

Homemade crafts began with the Arts and Crafts movement, a late nineteenth century design reform and social movement, primarily as a search for authentic and meaningful styles of the Victorian era.  Some protagonists of the era turned away from the use of machines and towards handcraft.  This movement was due in large part of a reaction to industrialization.
  The dictionary defines “homemade” as ‘made at home’ – ‘plain, simple, crude’ and for crafts – some special skill or art.  The term homemade crafts simply implies that a plain and simple item, that required some skill has been created at home.

Homemade crafts comprise a host of activities and hobbies that are related to making things with one’s own hands and skill, using limited tools.  Among the items considered as homemade crafts are, crochet, knitting, quilting, needlework, sewing, embroidery, cross stitch, macramé, wood working, metalwork, and bead work.
Homemade crafts became popular out of necessity in some areas.  The lack of money and the need for heavy warm sweaters, warm socks and gloves in winter because the incentive to create homemade wearable items and the women then turned their skills into providing these items.

Home made crafts can be a hobby.  A hobby is a spare time recreational pursuit.  An old fashioned quilting bee is a source of recreation, as well as creativity.  This has been popular for many years.  You can meet with a group and share your ideas and learn from a more experienced crafter with any homemade craft project.

Homemade crafts can be a source of income.  You can sell your items at a bazaar or you can sell them on e-Bay.  Men, women, boys and girls of all ages can find much satisfaction from doing homemade crafts.  Haven’t you noticed how a child reacts with delight when they give you a gift that they have made with their own hands?  These crafts can be learned during childhood from a family member or in classes at a hobby shop.  Once you have been taught a few basic skills, you are on your way to an enjoyable pastime of making many homemade crafts.

Choose one of the homemade crafts and spend your free time – while watching your favorite TV show while waiting to pickup kids at school – while waiting for a doctor or dentist appointment– just about anywhere, and create something beautiful.
